Engaging patients to move from awareness to action on skin cancer

September 1, 2026

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. Yet catching it early remains a major challenge, especially among those with darker skin tones. Phreesia Network Solutions surveyed 3,300+ patients to better understand where recognition breaks down along the patient journey and what it takes to help them act sooner.

This report explores:

  • What prevents patients from noticing signs of skin cancer on their own bodies
  • How skin tone, perceived risk and familiarity with recognition tools shape early detection and care-seeking
  • Where brands have the greatest opportunity to improve education around cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC), melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and other skin cancers

The results of our survey reveal a critical recognition gap: Many patients don’t recognize potentially harmful skin changes when they first appear. Opportunities for meaningful, actionable education before and after diagnosis are often missed, leading to delayed diagnosis, advanced disease and wider health equity gaps.
